Planning a trip to Chongqing? It’s essential to familiarize yourself with the city map and understand the locations of major attractions.
Chongqing is a city in southwestern China. Its overall terrain resembles a rabbit’s shape on the map, with the downtown area located in what would be the rabbit’s belly section. See illustration below:

The main urban area consists of 9 districts: Yuzhong, Dadukou, Jiangbei, Shapingba, Jiulongpo, Nan’an, Beibei, Yubei, and Banan. Beyond these core districts are newer suburban zones. Most visitors focus their itineraries within the circled downtown area shown above.

For natural landscapes like the Wulong Three Natural Bridges, you’ll need to travel about 160 kilometers (100 miles) to Wulong District. To experience the Yangtze River’s Three Gorges scenery including Qutang Gorge, Baidi City, and Three Gorges Peak, head approximately 420 kilometers (260 miles) to Fengjie County. Their approximate locations are circled here:

Exploring all worthwhile attractions across Chongqing’s districts would require significant time investment. Most international visitors focus on the downtown area where transportation is convenient. For optimal night views and accessibility, consider staying in Yuzhong District (circled below):

Covering 82,400 km² – roughly 105 times the size of New York City – Chongqing’s vast territory demands smart planning. Before your trip, use Google Maps to check distances between your desired destinations and create efficient routes.
