How to Get to Chongqing: A Local’s Transportation Guide

Welcome to my hometown! As a Chongqing local, I’ll help you navigate the best ways to reach this mountain city. Let’s break it down step by step.

✈️ Option 1: Flying to Chongqing

Good to know:

  • Limited direct international flights: Currently only Seoul (KE805), Singapore (MI976), Tokyo (SC8845) and a few others have regular direct flights. Check your local airline’s website or use Google Flights for updated routes.
  • Pro tip from my traveler friends: If you can’t find a direct flight, consider these smart transfer options:
    • Fly to Beijing/Shanghai/Guangzhou first (more international flights), then take a 2-hour domestic flight to Chongqing.
    • Try Chengdu as your first stop! Many European travelers love taking the high-speed train from Chengdu to Chongqing (only 1.5 hours with stunning mountain views).

🚄 Option 2: High-Speed Train (Recommended for China Tours)

Once you arrive in any city in China by plane, consider taking the high-speed train to Chongqing. China high speed trains, also known as bullet or fast trains, can reach a top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph).

How to book:
Use Trip.com (English-friendly, accepts international cards).

Key stations:

  • Chongqing North Station (Most central): Take Line 10 metro directly to downtown.
  • Chongqing West Station (Newer facility): Better for connections to Chengdu/Xi’an.
Watch out! These two stations are 40 minutes apart by metro – double-check your ticket!
